The advantages of hockey skates

Q: Name 3 reasons why hockey skates are better then figure skates for playing hockey.

A: Here are my three reasons why.

  1. They have more support.
  2. They are better at turning.
  3. And they are more comfortable.

I must go now, so goodbye

Hockey skates

Q. Why did you pick the hockey skates that you picked?

A. Here are my three reasons why.

  1. They fit & are in good shape.
  2. Mom is going to pay for them.
  3. And they are an improvement over what I used to be skating on before (I used to play hockey on figure skates).

So thank you for buying them for me, mom. :)

Gotta go,

Jacob

Envelope

Q. What would be your favorite thing to receive in an envelope?

A. The bill of sale for a Beachcraft King Air 350 airplane.

I think that this airplane is superior because of size, power, & comfort. However, their very high price tag & fuel consumption rate are not very nice. But you asked me what I wanted, so here is my response. :)

Gotta go,

Jacob

Tractors

Q. What is your favorite make of tractor?

A. My favorite make of tractor is CASE IH. Here are 3 reasons why I like CASE tractors:

  1. I like them because they are a good quality tractor: no JUNK here.
  2. I like them because they are a nice color.
  3. I like them because we have used them for years.

See you,

Jacob

Answer that question

Hello everyone,
Jacob has tried VERY hard to be happy that, this year in school, he can type a blog post rather than write in his journal. He still must do a little writing for penmanship class, but this arrangement is a major improvement to an active young man who would rather skip writing altogether. :) Still, I see him struggling with the "Creative" part of "Creative writing."

Yesterday, as I watched him write his responses to the blog tag that's been going around, I was surprised how easily he put his thoughts together. That was when I got the idea of asking him a question every day that he can answer here. So, from now on, I will write a question at the top of each post, and he will answer it below. Hopefully this will take the terror out of the terrible. :) If you think the question is kind of silly, then, you can know that it's just one busy home school mother trying to keep her writing-reluctant son free from writer's block! Here goes.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR? WHY IS IT MORE WONDERFUL THAN EVERY OTHER COLOR TO YOU?

Well, I think my favorite color is orange. I dont know, I guess orange has been my favorite color for a while, but I don't know why. Mom says I have to say 3 things I like that are orange so here they are.

  1. The #5 pool ball.
  2. A pumpkin.
  3. My hockey stick.

Thank you mom for letting me do it this way.
bye,
Jacob

Ice Skating!

Hi,
Yesterday, Andrew went up to the pasture and found a smooth, frozen pond! He called us at home and told us about it, and I got my schoolwork done in record time, because I had to do that before we could go skating. Anyway, we went up there at about 4:00 and came home at about 6:00. Here are some pictures of what it looks like before and after.

After an hour of cleaning the ice off, we had about an hour to skate before it got dark. I had two falls, Andrew one, and Cora 7/8. :)
Gotta go,

The Charger

Hi,

I have recently taken a liking to the old Dodge Charger, and mom told me to tell you some reasons why. Here is a picture of one. :)

I love old Chargers, let me count the ways. ;)

  1. My dad had one a long time ago.

  2. They are like the sportiest cars I have ever seen.

  3. They have big motors and a nice body style.

  4. This particular car (see top picture) has hidden headlights.

  5. The picture below shows the tunneled rear window that all Chargers have.

The bad part is they cost $30,000 to buy one that is fully restored, and you can't find parts at all, but I think it's worth it. :)

Gotta go, Jacob

Muscle cars

Continued from previous post.
"Or at least you understand one of the reasons people love them. There's a lot more to the appeal of a muscle car than the act of driving one. A convertible Hemi 'Cuda didn't fetch $7.5 million in the spring of 2003 simply because the buyer wanted a fast car to run through the quarter-mile. A muscle car's appeal has as much to do with what it symbolizes as with what if actually is. Symbols are powerful things--people die for them every day--and a muscle car symbolizes freedom. More precisely it symbolized an era of freedom.
It was freedom of that brought the muscle car into existence--the freedom of cheep gas and open roads, the freedom offered by the postwar American dream, the freedom to go just about anywhere and do just about anything. And it was the perceived loss of freedom that brought the classic muscle car era to an end. In the sour aftermath of the Vietnam war, the first war we clearly did nit win, our sense of national omnipotence began to wither. With the loss of faith in our elected officials following the Watergate break-in, we suddenly found ourselves adrift without fixed stars to lead us into the future. After the shocking realization that oil was a finite resource, one that depended on forces beyond our control, we confronted the fact that the tap on our economy's lifeblood could be shut off at any time. The freedom symbolized by the muscle car suddenly seemed fragile and transitory in the face of this terrifying trifecta."

Change of pace

Hi again,
This is TEACHER DAWN. Jacob asked me to introduce to you this new topic which he will be writing about for awhile. We were enjoying the book, "The Upland Game Hunter's Bible," right
after Jacob got his shotgun for his birthday. However, at our last trip to the Bismarck Veteran's Memorial Library, Jacob took a turn for the worse--just kidding, son!

It's just that his father's passion for loud, fast cars has taken root in my quiet, mild-mannered teenager. We brought home a stack of books about hot rods--old and new. He picked this book about 3 inches thick that day. I told him that I used to make it a practice to take the skinny books home as I used to lug books for all of us alone. Now that I have a strong, young man to help me lug, we may as well load up. :) The cake decorating ones that I brought home for Cora were much thicker than the ones I used to check out too. May how things change in a few short years!

Anyway, the writer of "MUSCLE--America's legendary performance cars" really has some deep thoughts about how societies' views on things affect car design. I was impressed with his understanding of how feminism (meaning the "Anything you can do, I can do better" mindset) has weakened our men and how that in turn has led to wimpy cars as compared to how they used to be. This guy is a deep thinker AND he has some fantastic pictures of the totally awesome muscle cars that were with us for only a decade.

Truthfully, I was ALMOST ashamed of myself as I listened to Jacob reading this. I can recall when Robert and I were dating, his brother drove in the yard with this bright yellow Dodge Charger. That thing was sooo loud that it made my heart beat so fast in my chest that I felt it thump, thump, thumping. I recall turning to Robert and asked him, "Who in the world is THAT?"

Robert had said, "That's my brother."

"What kind of a wild thing he must be," I thought and said something of that sort to my prospective husband.

Robert had quickly wiped the smile off his face and turned away from me. Years later he told me that this car had been his pride and joy when he was in his later teen years and early twenties. In fact, he had sold the car to his brother just months before he met me! I know for a fact that, had he been driving that Charger when we met, instead of his nice, quiet El Camino (not sure of the spelling), I'd not have given him a second glance.

As I listened to Jacob reading yesterday, I wondered why I thought of the young man who drove the Charger as "TROUBLE" instead of as "STRONG." I certainly am quite fond of my brother-in-law now years later, so why did he seem "WILD" when he drove a muscle car????

I truly am glad that I am more open-minded now to see that strong men are what men are supposed to be!!!!! Women who truly love them will come to understand, somehow, their need to control LOTS of horsepower with their very own, bare hands. How's that for an introduction, Jacob?

Jacob and I both want you to experience the thrill of hearing the authors, Randy Leffingwell and Darwin Holmstrom's description of driving a muscle car. So we quote from page 10 of their book already mentioned above. We quote:

"No other automotive experience matches the magic of executing a perfect second-third speed shift in a fast muscle car. For the most part, running a muscle car through the quarter-mile (even a perfectly tuned muscle car) is an exercise in brutality. It's exciting, thrilling even, and it's intense. But most of the time there's too much going on --too much car to control, too much power going to too little rubber, and too many parts that might break--to transcend the brutality of the moment and enter the magic zone.
When you drop the clutch and launch the car, you try to find a balance between wheel spin and traction, a delicate act when attempting to transmit outrageous torque through skinny, period-correct, bias-ply tires. When you make the first-second speed shift, wrestling over sized synchros around in that bone-crusher of a transmission, you're still doing the traction dance, trying to get the tires to hook up and blast you through the quarter-mile. By the time you make the final third-fourth speed shift, you're going fast enough for a muscle car's barn-door aerodynamics to come into play; the front end lightens up and steering inputs become more suggestions then direct controls. You're too busy trying to keep the beast on the road to fully enjoy the experience.
But a perfectly executed second-third speed shift is pure magic. You slam the gigantic shift lever up from second to third with no clumsy grinding noises emanating from the gearbox, then mash the right pedal to the floorboards while the rear wheels twist the engine's prodigious torque into the terra. At that moment you know what it feels like to wield God's own jackhammer, and you've experienced one of the peak moments in the automotive world. Muscle cars are loud, uncomfortable, and impractical compared to more sedate modes of transportation. But the moment you execute a perfect second-third speed shift, you know why people love them."

Jacob

I've got my permit ;)

Well,

Mom says that I should tell you the 12 steps to get your driving permit.

  1. Go to the drivers licence division in the transportation building.
  2. Wait in line, if any.
  3. Show valid ND ID, which can be a birth certificate and social security number.
  4. Fill out a form.
  5. Pay $5 to take the written test.
  6. If pass, return to the examiner, if fail, leave.
  7. Have your eyes checked in machine.
  8. If pass, they take your picture, if fail, leave.
  9. Pay $10 more.
  10. Wait for permit to print.
  11. Verify information
  12. Leave.

And that is what I did up in Bismark yesterday, along with a whole lot of other stuff.

Well, I had better go,

Jacob

BIG shotgun

Today, I found a video about a guy shooting a 13 foot long shotgun. I have posted it here. It is called the punt gun & it is loaded with 2000 grains of black powder, & the guy who shoots it says in a different clip that he uses 70 grains to load his .50 cal. rifle.

I like this video because it shows what can be done when someone puts their mind to doing something. There are more video clips that you can find on YouTube.

Birthday

Hi,

On November 5th I turned 14, and I am here to tell you what I got for presents. :) Cora gave me a book called, "The Art of Woodburning"; a talking book called, "Nory Ryan's Song"; & a movie called, "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo." The movie was very funny!

Andrew gave me 1 gift (a very nice one though), and that was a Saitek AV8R flying joystick :) I use it when I fly on Flight Simulator for those of you who don't know what a joystick is used for.
Dad & Mom gave me the new shotgun; a pair of new gloves; the expansion pack for flight simulator; & Andrew & I went on a hunt to find 12 pairs of socks! Mom had hid them in places that are warm or could provide heat.

Well, I had better get going.

Pheasants

Hi,

I just read in the book, "The Upland Game Hunter's Bible" about how hard it is to find, let alone shoot, a pheasant. Mr. Holland says, on page 21, that "A cock pheasant is undoubtedly the orneriest, most contemptible, low-down, miserable bird that a hunter ever had to contend with. There's no trick he doesn't know or won't use. Where possible he'll drop his head and tail to the ground and sneak away like a thief in the night, miraculously inconspicuous even in thin cover; if he can see his way clear, he'll dig in and, with head and tail high, run like a race horse; He'll squat within two feet of a hunter's feet, and let the man walk right past him; and he'll fly only when he is cornered -a rare thing-or when it is strictly to his advantage. And when he does jump, he'll do so with a flash of color and a raucous cackle that will throw a man's timing about twenty degrees off center. All of which is high praise. More power to him. And all of which makes the subject of how to hunt pheasants difficult to define."

All of this makes me very eager to go on my first pheasant hunt, and I will let you know how it goes after we do it.

Gotta go,

Jacob

Early Birthday Gift!!!

Hello,

Yesterday Dad, Andrew, & I went to Bismarck. While we were there, Dad bought Andrew & I both a brand new Remington 870 Express shotgun!! We shopped around awhile, and bought them at Scheels.
Here is a picture of me with my shotgun after we got home.
Today, one of our hunting friends stopped by, & we had a good chat. Andrew & I showed him our guns. He said that the 870 is the most popular & reliable pump shotguns on the market.

Thank you, Dad, for a gift I will always remember.

Well, its time to go,

Jacob

Cows :(

Hello,

Today we (Dad, Andrew & I) went up to our pasture to fix the fence; put electric fence up; & to move the cows into their new cell. As Dad & I came over a hill, we saw 2 cows, a bull, & 2 calves about a mile from where they should be.

After about 15 minutes of chasing, we had the bull, 1 cow & 1 calf going the right way, but the other cow & calf were running in any direction that we didn't want them to go. That was what the cow was always doing. Well, about half way through chasing her through the neighbor's sunflower field, Andrew joined us. We got her in the right place, & then went to work on the fence.

While we were down by the water, which is just a lake in the middle of nowhere, we wanted to take some posts out of the water. Seeing as we don't have a boat, we couldn't take them out. Then Andrew found a duck boat that some hunting friends of ours have, & they said we could use it whenever we wanted to. So, Andrew & I went out on the water & brought in the posts. I have a picture of us in the boat, but it isn't on the computer, so I will put it on later.

Well, I better get going,

Jacob

BIG R/C!

Hi,
I have found yet another video for you. This time it is about a VERY big R/C (remote controlled) airplane. Now, if you watch the video, you will see that this is no small plane, having 4 engines, retracting landing gear, HUGE wingspan & fuselage length, & taking two people to operate it!

I wouldn't want to crash that thing! If you did, you would be out of a couple thousand bucks.

Time to eat,

Jacob

Max D Again

Hi all,

I know I just posted about this subject, but I found this movie & even though it isn't the best quality, and it isn't in our language, He does a pretty good run.

Now, there is quite a bit of controversy about his save/rollover, but this is the only time I have seen a save like that, & I don't think anybody else could do it.

Bye,

Jacob

Krone? whats that!

Hello,

Today I will tell you about a farm equipment manufacturer from Germany, named Krone. They sell REALLY nice (and may I add REALLY expensive) hay and forage equipment. I would like to share a video with you about their 31' 10" cut, $280,000 self propelled mower. :)

I think that the Krone equipment is the best on the forage market because it is/has:

  • Innovative
  • High output & up time
  • High quality machinery
  • Wide range of equipment to suit all your forage needs
  • Built to last

I hope you enjoy my sales pitch. :) You can visit the Krone website at:http://www.krone-northamerica.com/. While you are there you can watch Krone demo videos like the one above (much better quality); order Krone equipment; hahaha, and read assorted Krone literature.

Well, I gotta go,

Jacob

Flight!

Hi,
Just in case you don't know, I am a future pilot-in-the-making. I have found a married couple who are professional flight instructors who sell video courses. Their names are John & Martha King.

I enjoy going to the King's website, which can be found at http://www.kingschools.com. I have learned a lot by watching little video clips, such as the one below that I found on YouTube. (you can find more clips there)

Mr. King makes it look easy, but it isn't. Taking off is the 2nd hardest normal flight operation there is, but he has had a lot of practice. So, when I have had a LOT more practice, I should be able to do that too.

Gotta go,

Jacob

Max D

Hi all,

I have been watching videos of my favorite monster truck, "Maximum Destruction." I have found a video where the driver gets tired of his old house (they moved first), and so they decided to destruct it the fast way.

I love how much air (jump height) he gets over the house--I just wouldn't want to pick up the rubble. :)

You will probably see a lot more videos on this truck, but I will try to not get so boring.

United Breaks Guitars Song #2

Hello everyone,

This is Jacob's mother and teacher--the same person. :) I have made an assignment for Jacob's schoolwork this year to post on his blog regularly. How regularly depends on if he prefers writing with pencil and paper on a particular day. I have a feeling, though, that there will be a whole lot more blog posts here than there have been in the past. :)

I would urge you to check here regularly and encourage Jacob by leaving short comments. In fact, I would suggest that you make your comments relative to the length of his post! Thanks for your help. My goal in this is to encourage Jacob to consider that communicating his thoughts to others is a skill worth pursuing. In other words, "Writing can be fun." :)

Thanks for your help,

Mrs. Bornemann

Hi all from Snowyville,

I have some big news in relation to my last post! Mr. Carroll has come up with the next song in his "United Breaks Guitars" series. I have posted it below.

I view this song as an all-around good music video.

I will keep you posted when he writes the next song,

Jacob

United Breaks Guitars

Hi again,
If the video in my last post was cut off by the border, just move your mouse over the video and click on the title.
Sorry about that.

United Breaks Guitars

Hi everybody,
The other day, Andrew's friend e-mailed us this video & we all thought that United Airlines
should have had a little more respect for people's property.
Here is Dave Carroll's story behind the song: Full Story: http://www.davecarrollmusic.com/story... - In the spring of 2008, Sons of Maxwell were traveling to Nebraska for a one-week tour and my Taylor guitar was witnessed being thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. I discovered later that the $3500 guitar was severely damaged. They didnt deny the experience occurred but for nine months the various people I communicated with put the responsibility for dealing with the damage on everyone other than themselves and finally said they would do nothing to compensate me for my loss. So I promised the last person to finally say no to compensation (Ms. Irlweg) that I would write and produce three songs about my experience with United Airlines and make videos for each to be viewed online by anyone in the world. United: Song 1 is the first of those songs. United: Song 2 has been written and video production is underway. United: Song 3 is coming. I promise. Follow me at http://twitter.com/DaveCarroll. Video Produced by Curve Productions of Halifax, http://www.curveproductionsinc.com./

United says that they will use this video as training material, & are trying to make up for what has happend.

Hello again.

Hi everyone,
It has been raining hard today so I am in the house & have nothing better to do, so I thought I would post. We had a campfire on the 5th & Mom likes her marshmallows fried to a crisp, but sometimes it doesn't quite work out for her. Someone got this picture* and I decided to put it on my blog, just to show how crisp she likes her food

Well, I will try to post more often but if I don't,I am just to busy.

Hi again.

Hi everybody, I am writing all of this post on my iPod Touch, so this is going to be short. I will write more to all of you on the big computer later. Goodnite

Hi,
If you read my mother's new blog post, then you probably saw that I was supposed to post about my late friend, Jacob Long.
I met him at the organic convention this year and, seeing that I was a volunteer, I got to work with him, because his mom is on the staff.
In the little bit of time that I got to know him, I really started to like him, and I got a picture of him that I well post here.

I might wright more on the subject later, but that is all for now.

sadly,

Jacob

Hi,
As you might already know, I am a cowboy nut, and I found this tribute to Roy Rogers on you tube, so I thought I would share it with you.

I hope that you liked that :)

On a different note, I saw a monster truck run the other day that was so amazing, I just had to show it to you!
Here it is.

Well, type to you later :)

Grandma's funeral

Hello,
Yesterday was my grandmother Erdie's funeral, and Cora, Andrew & I were all pallbearers, along with all of my cousins on that side.

Here is a picture of the church that the funeral was held in.

The front of the sole of my shoe was loose from the glue that holds it on, so while I was carrying the casket, I was always tripping over it. VERY ANNOYING.

Here is a video that I thought was very cool, but I would never do it with my helli :)

Howdy

Hello,
This is my very first blog post, and I hope that everyone reading this is interested in learning more about my life.
I hope you don't mind listening to me talk about airplanes, because I am sure you will hear a lot about them, as well as monster trucks, and daily farm stuff.
Well, I guess I should go get to work.
Jacob B.

PS. Here is a picture of me.
